Weekend Vikings
Gábor Szunyogh keys·Viktor Szathmáry drums
Weekend Vikings are a Budapest jazz duo. A Rhodes with synths stacked on top. And drums. Listening is like taking a small sailboat out into fog on purpose. A rope keeps tapping the mast in time, and the compass is more of a suggestion. Think of riding a bike on acid: the pedals keep going round and the trees have started to have opinions. Their music is like driving somewhere you have been once before, at night, with a passenger who insists they remember the way and is wrong about a third of the time. Playing one of their records is like the night tram home after a party. The rails know the way, and somewhere around the third bend the city outside got rearranged. Their songs are like stepping off a harbour wall and finding that flying is mostly a matter of not looking down. The seagull next to you is unimpressed. The second listen is like coming home. Everything is where you left it. Then you find a piece of chocolate you’d forgotten about, and suddenly the day has an extra chapter. Finding them is like opening a door you’ve passed a hundred times. You could swear it was always locked. This time it isn’t.
